Ambrosia Maple (used in top left clock) is a general description of any type of Maple that has been infested by ambrosia beetles. The beetles bore into the tree, and with it bring fungus that discolors the wood. The fungus discoloration gives a subtle cloud effect with the Chicago skyline in the background.

Maple Burl (used in the top right clock) to add the to swirling clouds, wind molded clouds that are common along the SoCal coast with the iconic pier visible in the background.

Eucalyptus (used in the below image) was used for its thick vertical grain that resembles an aspen forest.
